Is It Safe to Get Pregnant After a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck is an extensive procedure that helps to shape and contour the abdomen. Ideally, you should wait to have one until you have finished having children. However, what happens if you do get pregnant after undergoing the procedure?
Here, you’ll discover whether it is safe to get pregnant after a tummy tuck, and what will happen to your results if you do.
Is it safe to get pregnant after undergoing a tummy tuck?
Generally speaking, there aren’t any risks of falling pregnant again after you have undergone a tummy tuck. Both you and your baby will remain safe, regardless of whether you had a mini tummy tuck or a full abdominoplasty. However, there are some risks you should be aware of including:
- An increased risk of infection
- An uncomfortable pregnancy
The risk of infection is still low, but it is something to keep an eye on after the procedure. The main complication you may experience is an uncomfortable pregnancy. This is because the skin around the midsection is tighter, which can lead to some level of discomfort.
If you have any doubts, book a consultation with Mr Paul Tulley to identify your individual risk factors.
Will you be able to maintain results after giving birth?
The main concern patients have when they are thinking of giving birth after a tummy tuck is what will happen to their results. It is possible that the pregnancy will stretch the skin once again, causing the same results as before you underwent the procedure.
The rectus muscles may become separated, and you may also develop additional stretch marks in the area. However, there is a chance you will still maintain the results after giving birth.
Will I be able to have a second tummy tuck?
If you do lose the results of your initial tummy tuck after pregnancy, you can undergo a second one. However, you will need to wait until the body has fully healed before you can undergo another procedure.
It is also possible that you may not need a full tummy tuck. Instead, you may benefit from a limited revision, which wouldn’t be as intensive.
If you are thinking about getting pregnant after undergoing a tummy tuck, book a consultation to discuss the risks with Mr Paul Tulley. He will be able to advise you on whether it is better to wait a while to get pregnant again, and what you can expect if you do need an additional procedure.
