How to Reduce Swelling After Rhinoplasty
Swelling is a normal part of recovery after rhinoplasty, but it’s also one of the things patients notice most in the weeks and months following surgery. While the initial change in your nose is visible once the cast is removed, the final result continues to refine gradually as swelling subsides.
Understanding what to expect and how to support the healing process can help you feel more comfortable during recovery.
The role of taping after rhinoplasty
After rhinoplasty, a splint or cast is usually worn for the first 9-10 days to protect the nose and support the new structure. Once this is removed, some swelling will be apparent, particularly around the tip and bridge. Bruising around the eyes is also common at this stage, but tends to fade within two weeks.
Taping plays a particularly important role in rhinoplasty recovery. By applying gentle, even pressure to the tissues, taping helps reduce swelling, keeps the nose supported, and encourages the skin and underlying tissue to adapt to the new structure.
Mr Tulley tapes the nose for 4-5 days immediately after the cast is removed, and then recommends patients continue taping at night for at least three months. This helps to control swelling, supports the new shape, and encourages the tissues to shrink and settle more quickly.
Although the majority of swelling improves in the first three months, subtle changes continue for longer. Final results are typically seen between 10–15 months after surgery, depending on the complexity of the procedure.
Practical tips to help reduce swelling
There are several simple steps you can take at home to support your recovery and minimise swelling after rhinoplasty.
Keep your head elevated
Keeping your head raised, even while sleeping, helps reduce fluid build-up. Using two or three pillows at night or a wedge cushion can make this easier and more comfortable.
Use cold compresses in the early days
During the first 48 hours, applying cold compresses around (but not directly on) the nose can help reduce swelling and bruising. Always follow your surgeon’s advice on how and when to use them.
Stay hydrated
Drinking plenty of water helps your body to heal and can reduce the chance of excess fluid build-up. Also, avoiding heavily processed or salty snacks can support your recovery.
Avoid strenuous activity
Exercise, heavy lifting, and bending forward can all increase blood flow to the face, which may make swelling worse in the early weeks. Gentle walking is encouraged, but vigorous activity should be avoided until your surgeon confirms it is safe to resume.
By following aftercare advice carefully, keeping up with taping, and making small adjustments to your lifestyle, you can help reduce swelling and give your nose the best chance to heal smoothly. With time, the result becomes more refined, revealing the final outcome of your surgery.
