double chin surgery

Looking to eliminate your double chin? While it might be a common problem, that doesn’t stop a double chin from causing a lot of embarrassment. However, if you’re struggling to eliminate it through diet and exercise, you do have alternative treatment options.

Here, we’ll look at some of the best cosmetic treatments to get rid of that double chin and help you to regain your confidence.

The surgical facelift

If you’re looking to eliminate a double chin completely, the surgical facelift is a good option. However, this only applies if you have other signs of ageing on the face. A facelift is a major operation, requiring a lot of downtime. It aims to achieve a more youthful appearance by tightening the muscles and eliminating excess fat and skin.

There are risks of a facelift to be aware of before deciding whether or not this is the right option for you. Generally speaking, if you are only looking to address a double chin and not treat other areas of the face, the surgical facelift might not be the best option for you.

Lipo under the chin

If it is just your double chin you want to eliminate, lipo under the chin is a great option. These days, liposuction targets much smaller areas of fat. It is most commonly used as a contouring procedure and can safely eliminate small pockets of fat. This makes it a great choice for treating a double chin caused by excess fat.

One thing to consider here is that liposuction doesn’t address excess skin. So, you may need to use it in combination with another procedure to eliminate both the fat and the skin.

Facial filler treatments

In some patients, temporary hyaluronic acid dermal fillers might be a good option. These can help to strengthen the chin and the jawline. By drawing attention to other areas of the chin, it can successfully hide your double chin.

Choosing the right option for you

Each of the procedures mentioned above have their own pros and cons. It’s important to research the different treatments before deciding which one is best for you. It is also recommended that you book a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon. They will be able to advise you of which treatment is best for you.

Overall, there are a lot of ways to eliminate a double chin. If you’re looking to regain your confidence and address something that may have been bothering you for a while, call us on 020 7183 1559 to book a consultation with Mr Tulley today to discuss your options.

ear reshaping surgery

Now that mask wearing has become commonplace due to the pandemic, it has led to interesting trends developing in the cosmetic surgery sector. At first, patients rushed to have their eyes treated. However, a new trend is emerging which you may find surprising, and that’s cosmetic surgery on the ears.

Here, we’ll look at how masks are contributing to an increase in ear related procedures.

Why is ear reshaping surgery becoming more popular?

When you are wearing a mask, it fits around the ears. This can cause them to become a lot more noticeable than usual. While this problem corrects itself in most people once the mask is removed, for those with naturally protruding ears, it can highlight the problem.

Surgeons have noticed that the majority of new patients requesting this type of treatment are young adults. It also tends to be more popular for older men. This is because as we age, our earlobes tend to get longer.

These are just some of the reasons surgery on the ears is becoming more popular.

What procedures can you have done on the ears?

There are a couple of procedures that can be carried out to reshape and fix the ears. Surgery can be carried out to address issues with overgrown cartilage or the folding of the ear. With this option, it will take six months for the new cartilage to hold its position.

Other procedures include pinning the ears back, reshaping and reducing the size of the ears. With most procedures, bandages will need to be worn for a couple of weeks after the surgery. Scarring will typically be hidden behind the ear and the scar tissue that develops helps to keep the ear in its new position.

Things to consider

While ear surgery can help you to regain your confidence, there are a few things you should consider. If you are purely thinking of having the procedure due to recent mask wearing guidelines, you may want to hold off. We won’t be wearing masks forever so your current hang-ups over your appearance may disappear with time.

It is best to have a consultation with a qualified cosmetic surgeon to see whether you are a good candidate for surgery. During your consultation with Mr Paul Tulley, he will be able to discuss your reasons for the surgery and whether any other procedure may be a better option.

surgery for jaw definition

Procedures to help patients achieve the perfect selfie are becoming increasingly common across the UK. One area of the face deemed important for a good photo is the jawline. So, how can you achieve a defined jawline through cosmetic surgery?

Here, we’ll reveal the top jawline procedures to help you in your quest for that perfect selfie.

Surgery for jaw definition

Those seeking more permanent results can opt to undergo chin augmentation. The procedure can either enhance the size of the chin with implants, or reshape the bones depending upon the patient’s desired results.

If the chin is being reshaped, an incision is made in the lower jaw along the gum. From there, a bone saw, or chisel is used to cut the bone before it is moved and wired or screwed into place. As the incision is made within the mouth, you won’t need to worry about scarring.

Chin augmentation can be carried out alone, or alongside liposuction for more defined results. Careful assessment is made using a series of accurate measurements in clinic pre-op to select the correct implant in terms of projection and width.

A small incision is made hidden under the chin and a pocket made on the front of the mandible in which the implant is inserted and secured to the bone. The incision is closed with fine sutures removed at 5-7 days.

Liposuction may be used in the jowls and under the jawline to slim these areas and give additional  definition to the jawline and neck.

After undergoing the procedure, patients typically  don’t need to undergo a further operation to maintain results. It is considered a permanent solution.

Non-surgical jaw defining options

For patients who aren’t quite ready to go under the knife, there are some non-surgical options available. Fillers are popular treatments being used to contour the chin and jawline. These include both chin and jawline fillers.

The fillers can help to create a balanced profile, correcting weak areas of both the chin and the jawline. They are a temporary solution that will need to be redone within 12-24 months. However, the results are fantastic and can help those looking to avoid going under the knife.

Whether you are thinking of undergoing surgical or non-surgical jawline procedure, there are lots of factors to consider. Both come with their own risks and complications that need to be understood. This means a consultation is crucial before you decide which option to go with.

liposuction for Lipoedema

For patients suffering with lipoedema, their quality of life can be significantly impacted. The condition is said to affect around 11% of women and it can lead to issues with self-confidence, make it difficult to find clothing that fits and affect a patient’s day to day life.

One treatment which may help to combat the condition is liposuction. So, what exactly is lipoedema and how can liposuction help?

Understanding lipoedema

Lipoedema causes an abnormal accumulation of fat underneath the skin. This can result in painful swelling within the buttocks, thighs, legs and in some cases, the arms. It almost exclusively affects women, with the condition being extremely rare in men.

Love Island star, Shaughna Phillips, has recently revealed her struggle with the condition. She was diagnosed after coming out of the villa and has undergone liposuction to treat it. The trouble with lipoedema is that it worsens over time. This means treatment will be required to eliminate the problem.

So, what symptoms should you watch out for to determine whether or not you have it?

What are the symptoms of lipoedema?

The most obvious symptom of lipoedema is swelling in the legs or buttocks. As the condition doesn’t affect the hands or feet, the fat accumulation is easily visible. It can also cause:

  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Skin hypersensitivity
  • Ankle swelling

These are just some of the symptoms to watch out for. The fat accumulation will be unresponsive to diet and exercise. That’s why treatment is important.

How can liposuction help?

When carried out to treat lipoedema, the liposuction procedure is a little different. Surgeons use high-volume liposuction and need to be trained specifically in using the procedure to treat the condition. Patients are also required to spend up to three days in hospital afterwards.

Compression garments will need to be worn for a few months after the procedure. Patients are also advised not to drive for up to two weeks. So, the recovery process is a lot more intensive compared to standard liposuction procedures.

Like any procedure, liposuction for lipoedema does carry some risks. These will need to be discussed with Mr Paul Tulley before you undergo the surgery.

Overall, lipoedema can significantly impact your quality of life. Liposuction is an effective treatment, helping patients to regain their confidence and improve their quality of life.

benefits of a labiaplasty

A new study has discovered patients who undergo a labiaplasty see a marked improvement in their quality of life. The procedure, often referred to as a ‘vaginal rejuvenation’, is often dismissed as a mere cosmetic change, but it can have a profound impact on self-confidence.

Here, we’ll look at what the new study found and what you should know about the labiaplasty procedure.

The benefits of a labiaplasty assessed

The study, published in the September issue of the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Journal, alongside the official ASPS journal, looked into the benefits of a labiaplasty. Few studies have been previously carried out to determine the impact the surgery has on quality of life.

The study included 62 women aged 17-61 who had undergone a labiaplasty procedure. They were asked to fill out a questionnaire relating to symptoms caused by excess vaginal tissue prior to the procedure. They then completed another questionnaire during a follow-up appointment.

Prior to surgery, each patient had at least one of the 11 symptoms commonly reported in those with excess tissue. The main symptom included feeling self-conscious about the issue, with 93.5% admitting it impacting their confidence. Other symptoms included difficulty with clothing and intimacy issues.

After undergoing the procedure, the majority of patients were symptom free. Just 6.5% of patients still felt self-conscious after the surgery. Issues with intimacy saw the biggest improvement, with all patients seeing their symptoms disappear.

They concluded the quality of life for labiaplasty patients improved significantly after the procedure.

What is a labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty aims to correct the appearance and improve the hygiene of the labia. The surgical procedure changes the shape and size of the inner and outer labia to achieve desired results.

The surgery takes around one hour, either under a short general anaesthetic, or local anaesthesia in some cases. Most patients return home the same day and the recovery is fairly straight forward. Although it is a quick procedure, it is important to make sure you’re choosing an experienced, reliable surgeon.

Who is an ideal candidate?

Most women are ideal candidates for labiaplasty, though there are some exceptions. For example, the procedure isn’t recommended to be carried out on anyone under the age of 18. You should also be in good overall health.

Netflix Show Changing Cosmetic Surgery Choice Stigma

TV shows about cosmetic surgery haven’t always gone down too well with critics. Often known to contribute to negative body image, few shows have proven successful. However, a new Netflix show is changing the stigma around cosmetic surgery choice.

Skin Decision: Before and After follows patients as they go under the knife. While it is initially a makeover show, it also delves into the positive effect’s surgery can have on a patient’s life. Informative and powerful, could the show help people make a better-informed choice about going under the knife?

What is the new show?

Skin Decision: Before and After is one of the first cosmetic shows to handle cosmetic surgery with care. It doesn’t glamorise surgery, instead it provides a more informative and realistic look at what happens before and after a procedure.

Airing on Netflix, each episode follows two patients. You learn why they made the decision to go under the knife, as well as their experience after undergoing the procedure. Some of the stories are heart wrenching. This is what sets it apart from your average cosmetic surgery show. Most people view cosmetic surgery as a simple cosmetic option. However, the stories featured on the show prove it can have significant positive effects on people’s lives.

Understanding the positive effects of cosmetic surgery

Little is often said about the positive impact cosmetic surgery can have on a patient’s life. For many people, it isn’t about vanity. Instead, it’s about developing self-confidence and regaining their life.

In particular, it can be a life-changing option for those who have suffered an accident or illness which has left them with deformities. Many patients who choose to have surgery, have spent a lot of time avoiding going out in public, or wearing what they want to wear. So, having surgery can really help them to get their life back.

While cosmetic surgery is a major decision, it does have the power to drastically improve lives. This new Netflix show helps to eliminate the stigma and show patients exactly what they can expect.

right age for cosmetic surgery

These days, cosmetic surgery is much more accepted than it used to be. Record numbers of men and younger people are turning to cosmetic treatments to enhance their appearance.

While anti-aging treatments remain the most popular, they are no longer reserved for just older patients. Many people in their 20s are opting to undergo cosmetic procedures. The question is, is this too young to undergo surgery?

Here, we’ll look at whether there is a right age for cosmetic surgery and the top things patients should consider.

The right age for cosmetic surgery

Generally speaking, there is no ideal age limit for cosmetic surgery. The only restriction within the industry is that some procedures shouldn’t be carried out on young teens and children. This is because obviously the body doesn’t develop fully until after puberty.

Besides this, there really is no set age when you should consider undergoing surgery. Similarly, there is no upper age limit, as long as you’re fit and well with realistic expectations.

That being said, there are some procedures that work better during specific times of your life. So, let’s take a look at the popularity of specific treatments throughout the ages.

Popular procedures throughout the ages

Patients typically start opting for surgical procedures in their 20s. Rhinoplasty is a popular procedure carried out during this stage as the nose will now be fully developed. However, the most popular procedure for women in their 20s is breast augmentation.

Patients in their 30s prefer non-surgical treatments such as lip augmentation with dermal fillers and liposuction. The signs of ageing tend to start appearing now and Wrinkle Smoothing Injections are a fast and easy, if only temporary, fix. For women who have finished having children in this age range, the mommy makeover is also popular. This involves a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and liposuction.

From the age of 40 onwards, patients tend to focus on more permanent anti-aging procedures. These include eyelid lifts, facelifts and neck lifts.

So, while there is no ideal age to undergo cosmetic surgery, it does impact the types of treatments most suitable. Patients considering undergoing cosmetic surgery at any age should book a consultation will an experienced surgeon. They will be able to assess the risks and determine whether now is the right time to undergo the procedure.

Cosmetic Surgery Post-COVID

Trends within cosmetic surgery are always changing and the recent pandemic has seen a shift in treatments being requested.

As people have been forced to wear masks to protect others against the coronavirus, many patients are now requesting eye-related treatments. There has also been an increase in Zoom video calls, resulting in patients wanting to look their best.

Here, we’ll look at how face treatments are changing post-COVID and the main driving factors behind the shift.

Which procedures are proving popular?

The main treatments patients are requesting as a result of COVID-19, include:

Given it is a non-invasive treatment, it is unsurprising most patients are now turning to botulinum toxin injections. Helping to smooth out the signs of ageing on the forehead and around the eyes, it is an effective treatment option for those reluctant to go under the knife.

Wrinkle Smoothing Injections around the eyes is becoming particularly popular. Surgeons have even started calling these procedures the ‘Bright Eyed Look’. It involves injecting more Botox than usual around the eye area, eliminating crows’ feet as well as line and wrinkles around the side of the eyes.

Those seeking a more permanent solution to facial ageing are also undergoing an eyelid lift. As we age, our skin loses elasticity and the delicate eye muscles start to slacken. As a result, loose skin often accumulates on the upper eyelids and the natural fold of the eye is lost. Under the eye, fat can begin to protrude forward, creating eye bags.

Finally, the Toxin Brow Lift is one of the newest trends caused by the pandemic. Botulinum toxin is injected just under the brow, helping to smooth out the skin between the eyebrow and the eyelid and create more defined brows. Patients looks more youthful and wide awake and this is becoming increasingly popular with those men and women that are spending many hours in Zoom meetings.

What is driving the shift?

The use of face masks has largely driven the new trends in cosmetic surgery. When worn, they highlight the eye area. This in turn can make you focus on the signs of ageing which you wouldn’t necessarily notice quite as much as before.

It isn’t just eye-related procedures that have increased in popularity. As face masks hide most of the face, it has given patients an opportunity to hide their surgery. So, rhinoplasty and face lifts have also increased in popularity throughout the pandemic.

Patients needs to understand that although effective, Wrinkle Smoothing Injections and other minimally invasive procedures are only temporary. They need to be maintained if you want to keep up the results and you may benefit more from a surgical procedure to rejuvenate the eyes or face. There are also risk factors of both surgical and non-surgical procedures which need to be considered.

If you’re thinking of tweaking your eye area to achieve a more youthful look, book a consultation with an experienced surgeon today.

how long will my cosmetic surgery last

Prior to going under the knife, you’re likely to have a lot of questions. One thing you should know before you undergo any cosmetic surgery, is how long the results will last. This will help you to understand what to expect and whether future intervention will be required.

Here, you’ll discover how long you can expect cosmetic surgery to last depending upon the different procedures.

Facial procedures

There are lots of different facial procedures you can undergo to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing result. Non-invasive treatments have become especially popular, but the results are only temporary. On average, wrinkle smoothing injections last approximately four months in the first year of treatment and then six months thereafter in the following years. Dermal fillers can last between six to 18 months, depending on the individual, the products used and where it is injected. Typically, lip enhancement results last less long – six months on average – than the thicker fillers which are used in the cheeks and jaw/boney contouring and can last 12 to 18 months.

If you’re looking for longer-lasting results, a facelift usually lasts ten to 15 years. It produces the longest-lasting results of any anti-ageing facial treatment, particularly the SMAS facelift technique that targets the deeper soft tissues and muscular structure of the face.

Any facial rejuvenation procedure, whether that’s a brow lift or eyelid lift, cannot stop the effects of gravity which will continue to affect the skin and soft tissues of the face, but you can expect results to reset the ageing process by between five to ten years.

Body and breast procedures

So, you know facial procedures can last for at least a decade, but what about body procedures?

With a healthy lifestyle, the results of procedures such as a tummy tuck or liposuction can last a lifetime. Breast augmentation, on the other hand, typically requires repeat surgery in the future to replace the breast implants. This is very much dependent on the individual patient, though, as some will have no issues with their implants for many years and remain happy with their results. A breast lift or reduction can also produce lifetime results.

What affects cosmetic surgery results?

The timescales above are a general guideline. While most surgical procedures do last for a decade or more, this will depend upon numerous factors.

The skill of the surgeon will impact how long the results will last. Your lifestyle will also play a large role. For example, smoking, excessive sun exposure, lack of sleep/a stressful job, genetics and diet/lifestyle can all impact on the results of anti-ageing surgery.

It is really important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your surgeon. This will ensure your results last as long as possible. For an accurate idea of how long your results are likely to last, it’s a good idea to ask Mr Paul Tulley during your consultation and he can give you a general guideline about what to expect. cosmetic surgery post coronavirus

Now that the lockdown is gradually being lifted around the world, cosmetic surgeons have been reporting a rise in demand for consultations. The sector certainly hasn’t lost its popularity throughout the pandemic, but why is it now booming?

Here, we’ll look at some of the reasons why cosmetic surgery is booming post coronavirus.

It’s easier to hide the surgery

One of the main reasons that plastic surgeons around the world have seen a surge in requests is because Coronavirus has made it easier to hide. Usually, patients are wary of going under the knife due to the recovery time, but now have more time for recovery because they are working from home away from the office, and also may be on furlough.

Many governments have also made it mandatory to wear face masks in public. This too can cleverly hide any facial work patients have done. Patients have actively told their surgeons they are choosing to go under the knife because they can hide the surgery from others now.

The lockdown left more time for patients to focus on themselves

As the UK went into lockdown for months on end, it left people with a lot of time to focus on themselves and many have had the time to think about the cosmetic procedures they would like to have done and maybe always put off.

While many already knew they wanted a particular type of surgery, for others it gave them the opportunity to make a decision on the procedures that would boost their confidence and self-esteem.

To rectify lockdown weight gain

One of the more unique reasons cosmetic surgery is booming right now is to rectify lockdown weight gain. With nowhere to go, many people fell into the trap of eating more and exercising less and a recent King’s College London and Ipsos MORI survey of 2,254 Brits found that 48% of those surveyed felt they had put on weight due to heightened stress and anxiety.

Cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and a tummy tuck are proving particularly popular now surgeries can once again be carried out, although it’s important to understand that liposuction, for example, is not a quick fix for weight loss. It’s a fantastically effective body contouring procedure that can remove small, stubborn pockets of fat and sculpt the body.

Even the desire to look good on Zoom calls have been cited as a reason why so many of us are researching cosmetic surgery procedures to look and feel good about ourselves. There is now more focus on facial surgical and non-surgical procedures to look good on video meetings; rhinoplasty, chin surgery and facial rejuvenation including facelifting, wrinkle smoothing and facial filler injections have become much more popular.

Currently, London plastic surgeon Mr Paul Tulley is available for both face-to-face consultations in the clinic and video and phone consultations if you have any questions or need advice about plastic and cosmetic surgery.
